The Mexican Flag

I just read today that a lot of people of Mexican origin (many still in Mexico) are really peeved at American cartoonist Daryl Cagle.  It seems that he recently drew a cartoon mocking the Mexican "War on Drugs", using a distortion of their national flag.

Now I have heard that, in Mexico, alteration of their flag is a criminal offense, and common sense would seem to dictate that publications in Mexico should refrain from publication of same - but obviously common sense is as rare in Mexico as it is elsewhere. One of the larger news outlets published the cartoon, and the resulting outcry would be deafening if it weren't primarily in print.

I don't have a whole lot of empathy or sympathy for the Mexicans on this issue. For decades, US citizens and legal, resident aliens of Mexican extraction, along with a large population of illegal Mexican immigrants, have been getting away with public desecration of our national flag. They've been thumbing their collective noses at the rest of the United States, while standing in our front yard! Why should any US citizen get irate, or even care, if a cartoonist turns the tables on them? Especially if they missed the point of the cartoon entirely?

My advice?  If you are a citizen of this country, remember where your loyalties are supposed to lie.  If you are a legal immigrant, remember your manners and treat your host country with respect. If you don't want to do these things, you are perfectly within your rights to find a country more to your liking and go there - permanently. If you are an illegal immigrant, you already know that you are breaking our laws by being here at all.  You have no rights here.  Don't presume the protections of our Constitution. They are for citizens and legitimate guests only.

Mariner.
